January Fishing Report
Fishing is on fire in this cooler weather. You can target just about every inshore species you want…. Flounder, Trout, Redfish, Snook, Sheep head, Black Drum, and even Grouper. In Ormond Beach you can find the Redfish and Flounder along the shallow oyster bars and creek mouths in the Tomoka Basin and Halifax River. The fish are feeding on shrimp, crab and mullet. The Black Drum are on the deep oyster beds and submerged structure in the Halifax River. To catch them I would use a cut blue crab or live shrimp on a bottom rig (use the lightest weight to hold your bait on the bottom). The Snook are in the deep channels and cuts from the Tomoka River all the way to Ponce Inlet. Fish a long deep diving crank bait or a suspending jerk bait. If you are looking for Trout fish the deeper dock and drop offs with a live shrimp on a slip cork to find the depth they are at. You can find the Trout from North Ormond Beach through Daytona Beach. Ponce Inlet is holding a lot of Sheep head around the bridges, jetties, and the drop offs with oysters. Use fiddler crabs on a knocker rig or bottom rig with a short leader. You can also find Grouper in the dame areas. Use small pin fish or small bait fish with a bottom rig on an extra rod. Happy Holidays and tight lines…….
